Alexander Newland
Alexander Newland is part of the 2022–2024 BAFTA Elevate cohort and is an alumni of the TV Collective’s Breakthrough Leadership programme, sponsored by Sky, ITV, and BBC Studios. Alex has worked in the creative industry for over 30 years as an actor and producer across digital media, live events, and film.
As a co-founder, Alex and partners are launching the new production company As Big As This. Their first projects are a series of films and a documentary to sit alongside the album Daffodils and Dirt by the band SAM MORTON, a collaborative project with Samantha Morton and XL recordings Richard Russell. As Big As This are developing an exciting slate creating original IP and have secured the rights to existing work.
Alex produced his first feature film, Up on the Roof, starring Natalia Tena and Nathaniel Parker, along with numerous short films, commercials, and music videos. His work has won awards and screened at BAFTA and Academy Award qualifying festivals, including Palm Springs, Aesthetica, and LSFF. He recently directed his debut short film, LEEWAY, which is now beginning its festival journey.
He’s passionate about making the film industry more equitable and accessible. As well as making films Alex is also the COO of Breaking Through The Lens, an international non-profit that gives film directors of marginalised genders access to grants and finance at large film markets.
