FILM SYNOPSIS
"The Power of Emory COMPASS is a compelling documentary that shines a light on the fight against one of America’s most urgent public health crises—the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Southern United States. Centered around the groundbreaking work of the Emory COMPASS Coordinating Center at the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health, the film follows the voices of community advocates, public health leaders, and grassroots organizations working on the front lines to transform how the South confronts HIV.
Through powerful personal stories and community-driven action, the documentary reveals both the challenges and the resilience within communities disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. The stakes are high: although the South is home to about 38% of the U.S. population, it accounts for more than half of all new HIV diagnoses nationwide, making it the epicenter of the epidemic. Structural barriers such as stigma, poverty, and limited access to healthcare continue to fuel the crisis, particularly among Black communities who experience the greatest disparities in HIV infection rates.
At its heart, The Power of Emory COMPASS is a story of collaboration, empowerment, and hope. By investing in local leadership and amplifying community voices, the COMPASS Initiative® is helping to reshape the region’s response to HIV—demonstrating that sustainable change begins when communities are equipped with the tools, resources, and support to lead the way."
