This is the 8th year for the festival, which began with a 2019 launch. This year’s SABIFF 2026 theme, HISTORY upRISING, is an act of resistance to the political erasure mandates to dismantle African American history and studies in schools. HISTORY upRISING, centers the urgency of preserving, honoring, and protecting Black history, especially during a time when access to these stories is increasingly challenged. SABIFF affirms film as a powerful medium for truth, memory, resistance, and cultural expression. Everyone holds the power to be a change-maker in their community. Through creative expression, Artists, Filmmakers, Creatives and anyone else can make a meaningful impact by speaking out against injustice, reading banned books, educating ourselves on accurate African and African American history, and crafting stories that center social justice and representation. Information is power!
Film has the extraordinary power to inspire, unite, educate, and motivate. It is a vital tool in shaping culture and consciousness.
SABIFF proudly serves as a virtual and local platform to empower filmmakers and drive dynamic vision of storytelling forward. We are committed to exposing audiences to a wide array of narratives, perspectives, and representations of Black people across the global Diaspora, stories that have historically been distorted, overlooked or underrepresented. SABIFF is a space open for everyone to experience, engage with, and embrace the richness and range of Black cinema. SABIFF 2026 will take place over the course of 3-days, both in-person at select San Antonio venues on the Eastside and downtown, as well as online at sabiff.tv.
