Filmmaker Bios:
Adisa Septuri
An award-winning director, producer, and philanthropist, Adisa’s debut feature film Skin in the Game premiered at Urbanworld in 2019 and won Best Director Award at the 27th Annual Pan African Film Festival and soon after, the film was released theatrically to rave reviews. An MFA graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, Adisa premiered two films on Showtime and won the Outfest Audience Award for Outstanding Short Narrative and Best Short Film at the San Francisco Black Film Festival. Facilitated by acclaimed filmmaker Haile Gerima, Adisa was selected to participate in Ava DuVernay's ARRAY Inaugural Masterclass in 2021. Adisa’s latest documentary entitled iFine is set in the Kono district of Sierra Leone where he has worked with the youth for over ten years. Apart of his philanthropy work, Adisa’s Sports and Arts Academy for underprivileged youth living in the diamond mining district is currently in construction and is set for a grand opening in 2023. |
Ebony Gilbert
Television writer, playwright, and author, Ebony Gilbert began her career writing weekly articles about minority youth for the Miami Herald. After receiving her MFA in Screenwriting from Loyola Marymount University, she co-wrote and directed the award-winning play complex[ion] woman and in 2017, Gilbert was selected as a Film Independent’s Project Involve Writing Fellow. In 2018, Gilbert was named “Writer to Watch” by WeForShe and the following year, she began her writing career in television working on CW’s Batwoman for three seasons. And her graphic novel, Billie Holiday, was named one of the Best Travel Comics by Book Riot in 2022. Gilbert started her company, Dirt-Stained Roses, in hopes of merging community activism with the arts and has awarded over 20 students in Sierra Leone a scholarship to help fund their drama program. Under her company, she debuted ships a comin, and has won numerous awards including Best Animated Short and Best AfroFuturism Award. Inspired by the youth in Sierra Leone, Gilbert co-directed and produced her first documentary film, iFine. |
