Preschool To Prison
Documentary Short | Duration: 0:16:31 | USA
Trailer:
Description: Preschool to Prison is a compelling examination of how the United States public school system is built and operated like prisons. Zero-tolerance policies are used to justify suspension and arrests that set up a pathway to send children of color and children with special needs to go from school to prison. Children are being suspended, restrained, dragged, physically manhandled, and subsequently arrested for minor offenses such as throwing candy on a school bus. These personal accounts from people affected by the school to prison pipeline give riveting tales about the generational impact on society.
Filmmaker Bio:
Dr. Karen Baptiste Karen "Dr.K" Baptiste is a first-time filmmaker, but a visionary who can make magic and transform any space she’s in. Unabashed and resolute in her stance against injustice of any kind, she is a staunch advocate for equitable resources in the Black and brown community and special needs community. Having been a volunteer at Sundance Film Festival, she was so inspired by the creative storytelling from the filmmakers she met that it propelled her to create this documentary with compassionate courage by bridging her love of advocacy for children impacted by the criminal justice system and education reform through storytelling in film and media. Growing up in the Bronx and teaching in the Bronx, seeing kids drop out of school was the norm. Seeing her peers end up in prison was also a norm. Dr.K vowed to rewrite the narrative for kids in the Bronx and all other marginalized communities where resources are often deficient and drop out rates are high. In addition to creating this documentary, she was featured in Allure Magazine to discuss the importance of women’s beauty and self-image; she has also acted in the film Burden, Puppy Love, and the web series, Shiny New Things. https://canvasrebel.com/meet-karen-dr-k-baptiste/ |
